The main single-player story takes place over 20 years after the events of the previous game (continuing the plot's "alternate timeline" where thunder god Raiden's visions from the original timeline influences key changes in the plot). Also returning from UMK3 is the ability to quickly run forward (complete with a regenerating "sprint gauge"). After seeing their dead friends revived with dark magic, a team of classic Mortal Kombat characters team up to stop Shinnok. In an effort to avenge his death and take advantage of the supposed peace in Earthrealm, the evil sorcerer Shinnok and his army of minions attack, spurring on an epic war. The story is a direct continuation of Mortal Kombat 9, taking place two years after the death of the evil Shao Kahn. Like Mortal Kombat 9, Mortal Kombat X contains a multi-chapter story mode containing dozens of fun fights.
